New River is actually part of the North Cumberlands WMA, which also includes Royal Blue and Sundquist. It is Scott County's newest WMA, purchased by the State of Tennessee from Lyme Timber Co. in 2007. The WMA connects with both the existing Royal Blue WMA, as well as Sundquist WMA. As with the other WMA units, New River is open to ATV riding.

HUNTING: Hunting on New River is open with the statewide hunting seasons. All hunters must possess a valid Tennessee hunting license and appropriate supplemental licenses. For license costs, hunting season dates, bag limits and other information, see the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website. Hunting licenses may be purchased online at the TWRA website, from many area merchants, or by visiting the Scott County Clerk's Office.

ATV RIDING: ATV riding is permitted on many trails within the WMA. Riding is permitted year-round. During deer hunting seasons in November and December, riders must wear 500 sq. inches of fluorescent orange visible on their front and backs. For riders who do not possess a valid hunting license and WMA hunting permit, a special use permit is required. The cost of the permit is $61 annually for Tennessee residents, or $12.50 per day for Tennessee residents. For non-residents, the cost is $191 annually or $30.50 per day. Riding questions should be directed to Rusty Dunn by calling 423.562.2013.
