Scott County is a great place to visit. The county is home to the
Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, a 115,000-acre national park that encompasses the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. As an all-around outdoors recreation destination, the Big South Fork is unrivaled in our region. The whitewater paddling and equestrian riding opportunities are both recognized as among the best in the Southeast. The unique geological makeup of the park make it a hiker's paradise as well. The park features nearly two dozen waterfalls, more than 100 natural arches, and a number of other interesting rock formations. The park connects with the Daniel Boone National Forest to the north and Pickett State Park & Forest to the west.
But the Big South Fork is just the start of the outdoors recreation opportunities offered by Scott County. Three wildlife management areas -- Royal Blue, Sundquist and New River, ranging from 20,000 acres to 80,000 acres -- fall partially in Scott County, offering unique bird-watching opportunities, ATV riding, fishing and more. The New River Scenic Railway offers excursion trips into the beautiful Cumberland Mountains and back in time, to a day when coal and timber were hauled along the same rails.
