As with Scott County's other wildlife management areas, Sundquist WMA is as popular for its ATV riding opportunities as for its wildlife. Managed by the State of Tennessee, Sundquist is a 73,000-acre management area adjoining the Royal Blue and Brimstone WMAs. In addition to its hunting and off-highway riding opportunities, Sundquist is popular among birdwatchers. Both the Cerulean Warbler and Golden-winged Warbler nest within the boundaries of the management area. The headwaters of New River are also home to rare mussel species.

HUNTING: Hunting on Sundquist is open with the statewide hunting seasons. All hunters must possess a valid Tennessee hunting license and appropriate supplemental licenses. For license costs, hunting season dates, bag limits and other information, see the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website. Hunting licenses may be purchased online at the TWRA website, from many area merchants, or by visiting the Scott County Clerk's Office.

ATV RIDING: ATV riding is permitted on many trails within the WMA. Riding is permitted year-round. During deer hunting seasons in November and December, riders must wear 500 sq. inches of fluorescent orange visible on their front and backs. For riders who do not possess a valid hunting license and WMA hunting permit, a special use permit is required. The cost of the permit is $61 annually for Tennessee residents, or $12.50 per day for Tennessee residents. For non-residents, the cost is $191 annually or $30.50 per day. Riding questions should be directed to Rusty Dunn by calling 423.562.2013.

HIKING: Sundquist WMA is home to a portion of the Cumberland Trail, a 300-mile hiking trail extending from Cumberland Gap in northern Tennessee to near Chickamauga National Park near Chattanooga in southern Tennessee.

Other uses, including hiking, bird watching and elk viewing, are permitted on the management area without a required permit.
